Signs Your Contractor Website Is Losing You Calls

SPYCE MediaOct 12, 2026

Most contractors never find out about the calls they did not get. A homeowner lands on your site, gets frustrated and taps the next company on Google. You never hear about it. Your phone just rings a little less than it should.

The good news is that the warning signs are usually easy to spot once you know where to look. Here are the most common ones we see on plumber, electrician, HVAC and contractor websites, along with what to do about each.

1. Your site is slow on phones

Most homeowners search for a contractor on their phone, often while dealing with a problem. If your site takes more than a few seconds to load, many of them will leave before they see your phone number.

What to do: Test your home page with Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Large images, old plugins and cheap hosting are the usual culprits.

2. Your phone number is hard to find or does not tap to call

If a visitor has to hunt for your number, or tapping it does nothing, you are losing the easiest call there is.

What to do: Put a tap-to-call number at the top of every page and test it on a real phone.

3. Your contact form is not sending

This one is sneaky. Forms break after updates, when email settings change or when someone leaves the company and their inbox is shut down. Leads go nowhere and nobody notices.

What to do: Fill out your own form once a week and confirm it arrives. If it does not, fix it today.

4. Your services or service area are out of date

If you added heat pumps, generators or bathroom remodels but your site does not mention them, homeowners searching for those services will not find you. The same goes for towns you now serve but never added.

What to do: Make sure every service you want more of has its own clear section or page, and list the towns you cover.

5. Your photos are old or generic

Stock photos and project pictures from years ago make a busy company look inactive. Homeowners want to see real work and real people.

What to do: Add a few recent job photos every month. Before and after shots work especially well.

6. Your reviews are hidden

You might have dozens of great Google reviews, but if none of them show up on your website, visitors do not see that proof when they are deciding.

What to do: Feature a handful of strong, recent reviews on your home page and key service pages.

7. There is no clear next step

Some sites tell a nice story but never ask the visitor to do anything. If a homeowner is not sure whether to call, fill out a form or book online, many will do nothing.

What to do: Give every page one clear action, like "Call now" or "Get a free quote", and make it easy to find.

8. You get a security warning or see strange content

Browser warnings, odd pop-ups or pages you did not create are signs of a hacked or neglected site. Most visitors will leave immediately, and Google may warn people away from your site.

What to do: Get it cleaned up right away and put regular updates, backups and monitoring in place so it does not happen again.

9. You do not show up when you search your own services

Search for your main service plus your town, like "water heater repair" and the name of your city. If you cannot find yourself, homeowners cannot either.

What to do: Make sure each core service has a solid page with clear headings, local details and real content. Keep your Google Business Profile up to date and consistent with your site.

10. Nobody owns the website

This is the root cause behind most of the problems above. When nobody is responsible for the site, small issues pile up until the site is quietly costing you work every week.

What to do: Put someone in charge, whether that is you, an office manager or a care plan.

Fixing it vs starting over

If you only spotted one or two of these signs, a few focused fixes may be all you need. If you checked off half the list, it might be time to start fresh. A newer, faster site with the right structure is often easier and cheaper than patching an old one.
